reading at ASFS
The Albuquerque Science Fiction Society invited me and author Lauren C. Teffeau to do a reading and discussion with our new books. Teffeau is the author of several science fiction books, and her latest novella, Accelerated Growth Environment, was released in March from Shiraki Press. My novel, Skies of Fire and Smoke, is scheduled for release April 24, but I snagged copies for the event.
The rented room in the church was packed, which surprised me. Lauren and I each read a ten-minute passage from our work. I read from the first chapter, when Lieutenant Johann Fischer, flying a Fokker triplane, encounters a dragon on a mission.
We casually discussed one another’s work, fielded questions, sold and signed books. I was happy to almost deplete my supply, and it was fun talking with the Society members.
Several friends made the trip from my town, Mountainair, New Mexico, which is a three-hour round-trip, so I felt supremely flattered. In fact, when writing my D&D group with the news of the reading, I jokingly promised to draw a penis in their book if they bought one. One friend, approaching the table with her newly purchased book, was about to demand the art but cut herself off mid-sentence when she noticed Lauren’s little daughter nearby.
No penises were drawn that day.
